South Australia is participating in more than AUD$10 billion worth of defence contracts, including:

  • $8 billion Air Warfare Destroyer contract;
  • 10-year $1 billion deal to maintain and upgrade the AP-3C Orion aircraft fleet;
  • Multi-billion dollar contract for Collins Class submarines 25-year through-life support;
  • The 1,200 personnel 7RAR Battle Group, to be moved to Edinburgh, in Adelaide's north, in 2011;
  • The $1 billion customs Project Sentinel contract - the world's largest fixed-wing civil maritime surveillance program;
  • Assembly of the 12 future submarines.

Activity includes:

  • Hosting the Australian Defence Force's aerospace and maritime surveillance operations at Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Edinburgh, and the world's largest test facility for long-range missiles and rockets:  the 127,000 square kilometre Woomera defence and commercial test, evaluation and training range.
  • It is also the base for National Air Support, which provides civilian maritime surveillance for the Coastwatch border protection program.
