South Australia has approximately AUD$13 billion worth of projects at various stages of development in the mining and energy sectors.

The South Australian minerals and energy industry encompasses:

  • Mining
  • Minerals manufacturing
  • Traditional energy generation (coal and gas-based electricity)
  • Sustainable forms of energy generation (solar, wind turbine, geothermal)

In the year to December 2009, minerals and mineral manufactures exports totalled $2.8 billion, or 34% of the State's total goods exports.

The State is a key minerals supplier, with almost 40% of the world's known recoverable uranium reserves and significant volumes of copper, gold and silver.

South Australia was recently named the 5th best ranked mining jurisdiction in the world for resource investment in the Resource Stocks' 2009 World Risk Survey, which also rated South Australia as the least risky jurisdiction in Australia in which to invest, and the second internationally.

South Australia also has 58% of Australia's installed wind power capacity and over one-third of Australia's grid-connected solar power system.
