WORK
I'm about to head to South Australia, how do I start looking for work?
Firstly take a look at the search engines and other information listed in our downloadable Jobs brochure, as well as Immigration SA's jobs section.
We highly recommend you research the relevant associations,
authorities, programs and employers in the field of your interest
to gauge employment opportunities, especially as not all are
advertised online. Family and friends that reside in South
Australia may also be aware of opportunities that are not widely
advertised.
We also recommend looking at the Department of Trade and Economic Development's Major Developments Directory (2010-11), which lists many of the major South Australian projects in the pipeline including infrastructure, water, urban development/construction, defence, education, minerals and energy. It also lists the details of the managing organisation.
How do I find out more about the average wage for my occupation in Australia?
Visit the Federal Government's job website joboutlook.gov.au for information on job prospects and wages/salaries.
I am going on a working holidaymaker visa, are there any other places I can look for work?
Besides the Jobs brochure as listed above, you may also wish to consider Work in SA, which links working holidaymakers with South Australian employers. Another website is www.helpx.net, which uses an 'exchange' program whereby employers provide food and accommodation in exchange for labour. There are a number of exciting and interesting opportunities listed, including work with native animals.
How do I apply for my second working holiday visa?
To be eligible, you must have completed a total of 3 months' full-time 'specified work' in a regional area while on your first working holiday visa. This need not be 3 months in a row, but can be accrued over the year - plus it can be a mixture of paid and unpaid work. Adelaide is one of the few capital cities where you can do specified work too!
Please see the DIAC website for the list of the types of work that can be done and what other eligibility criteria must be met. Get creative - it could be working at the Kangaroo Orphanage in Coober Pedy, helping clean up or rebuild a disaster-affected area, or learning to make artisan cheese at the Woodside Cheese Wrights in the Adelaide Hills!
LIVING
What kind of services are available to migrants arriving in South Australia?
Please see our downloadable brochure about Living in South Australia, which has all kinds of useful information to help you settle in. Also visit the Useful Settlement Information section on Immigration SA's website.
Are there any restrictions on bringing pets into South Australia?
The Federal Government imposes quarantine requirements on pets brought into the country. Please see their website for more information: http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/cat-dogs
Certain councils in South Australia also have regulations regarding the number of pets allowed per household, as well as registration and collar requirements. You will need to check the 'Pets' section of the website for the council governing your area of residence.
All the South Australian councils and their website details can be found here:
